Korea cafe order & cost decoder

Korean cafes speak their own abbreviated language. 아아 is iced americano, 따아 is hot americano, 라떼 is latte. Asking for "아이스 아메리카노" gets a polite smile; saying "아아" is fluent. The 2인 1잔 (two-people-one-drink) rule is a quiet social norm that's also environmentally framed. There are size upcharges, take-out cup fees, time limits at some franchises, and the seasonal ice-water extra fee. This tool gives you the order phrasing and the cost math.

What this solves

Cafes are part of the everyday Korean experience, but ordering can feel awkward without the lingo. This tool gives you the abbreviation, the total cost, and the social rule (2인 1잔, take-out cup fee, time limits). It also tells you when to ask "여기 앉아도 돼요?" (May I sit here?) and whether WiFi is free.

아아 vs 따아 prices

아아 (iced americano): ₩3,500–₩5,500. 따아 (hot americano): ₩2,800–₩4,500. Hot is usually cheaper (ice + cup + dilution logistics). Most chains charge the same year-round but a few (Twosome Place, Hollys) vary ₩500 by season.

2인 1잔 (2-people-1-drink)

Social norm: 2 people share 1 drink. Order "두 사람에 한 잔" or just say "2인 1잔이요." Saves ₩3,000+ but is sometimes seen as parsimonious; many younger Koreans do it openly. Some cafes charge a small "추가컵" fee for the second glass (₩500).

WiFi & time limits

Most franchise cafes (Starbucks, Twosome, Ediya, A Twosome Place) have free WiFi with no password. Independent cafes often require password from the barista. Some franchises have a 2-hour soft limit on busy days; staff won't enforce but will hint.

Take-out cup fee

Korea's 일회용컵 보증금 (disposable cup deposit) policy: ₩300 deposit per cup since 2022, refunded when you return the cup at a kiosk. For most visitors, it's a small extra charge; locals get it back.

FAQ

Can I sit for 3 hours?

Yes in practice at non-peak times. Don't be the person with empty cup, full table, blocking seats.

Is it rude to 2인 1잔?

No — it's the norm. Even couples often do it.

Can I bring my own cup?

Most cafes allow it; some give ₩300–₩500 discount. Clean the cup first.

What's the etiquette for laptops?

Most cafes fine with laptops but not taking calls. Study cafes (스터디카페) are for working; some charge by hour.
